In-Class online lesson #12 - Logic and Decision-Making

Step 2:

     A common theme among the scrolls within the three caskets is judgement based on appearance. For the scroll within gold casket, it appeared that the Prince of Morocco judged the gold casket just by its appearance, thinking that Portia was worthy, just like the gold casket.  However, the scroll stated that the golden casket is a symbol of hollowness and treachery of wealth, and was a misjudgment of what the Prince of Morocco feel of the golden casket. This is showed by "All that glisters is not gold", showing that appearances might lie and we should not judge anyone or anything just by their appearance.
 
    For the silver casket, the scroll is written about the difference between appearance and reality, where the Prince of Arragon is depicted as a fool, "I will ever be your head", which showed that he is a fool. Also,the scroll showed "Silvered o'er", which means silver-haired and therefore appearing wise, but this is not the case,  as the casket was not the correct one. This showed another misjudgment just like the Prince of Morocco.

    Lastly, the lead casket's scroll was written, "You that choose not by the view". This showed that Bassanio chose not just according to the appearance, but actually chose after more thinking and was thus about the choose the correct casket, the lead one, and was able to win Portia.


Step 3:
     I stared hard at the four witness. As the detective of a small city of a small country, somewhere on Earth, I was in charge of such murder cases. The most recent one, and one of the most easiest one, was in my hand. The master of the Talelaki Mansion was murdered, and the only three people in the mansion were the maid, the butler and his wife, which was also the mistress of the mansion. The last witness was my best friend, George, and he was the most honest person I had ever seen. He was outside the mansion, going for a patrol, and saw the murderer, who dressed in black and carried a bloody weapon out of the mansion. However, the three other witnesses gave contradictory statements.
 
    The maid had said that she saw someone huge rushing past her, someone of the size of the butler. The butler, on the other hand, said that he saw the mistress came out of the master's room, where he was killed. Lastly, the mistress said that she saw both the maid and the butler rushing out of her husband's room and breaking through the window, and escaped. However, George said that he saw one person jumping out of the windows in the first storey.

     I digested what I had heard. George's statement meant that the mistress was not saying the truth, while it is possible for both the maid and the butler to be saying the truth. Hmm... If it were someone who broke in, that is not possible. I personally checked the windows and the doors, there was no signs of forced entry. It is the work of an insider. If the butler was the murderer, then the maid was stating the truth. There is no possibility of the maid being the murderer. If the two had worker together, then only the mistress is correct, but it is contradictory to what George had said. No, I trusted my friend, he is very honest. Why would the mistress lie? If the mistress was the murderer, then both my friend and the butler was stating the truth. The maid saw the butler rushing by her, but it might not be from the room of the butler. Yes, the mistress must be the murderer!
 
      "You are the murderer, Madam!" I pointed to the mistress of the mansion, and the mistress cursed before she could stop herself. Aha! 

Book Review

   Book review topic on: Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow

      A fiction book I read recently is titled "Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow". This book is aboutthe adventure of Jake and his sister, Kady, travelling across time into a different world populated by lost civilizations such as the Mayans and Romans. As they enter Calypsos, they find monsters like grackyls, monsters that work for the Skull King, also known as Kalverum Rex. Kalverum Rex, an evil alchemist, was the previous Magister, but turned evil and killed another Magister. He was banished, but, he built an army and was able to sneak his army into Calypsos from the help of a betraying Magister. As the story continues, Jake and Kady need to plan on how to return back to their own time and home, but before that, they need to defeat the Skull King, who seems to want both of them, dead or alive.

Reflections:

      This adventure showed much determination and resilience from Jake, as the main character. He was determined in defeating the Skull King and thinking of ways for them to escape back to their own time. He needed to race against time in the last few chapters, as the Skull King had attacked the city, and he needed help from the Ur, another lost civilization. 

       Also, he showed excellent courage, as he was willing to "sacrifice" himself by tricking the Skull King that he had surrendered. However, this was actually a plan, to activate the shield again and push the Skull King's army out. Lastly, he showed great potential as a leader, he was able to lead his friends to defeat the Skull King, and this was done through trust and teamwork. I feel that we should all learn from his characteristics, since it showed his abilities to survive in harsh conditions and to think calmly in dire situations. Thus, I feel that it is important for us to learn from him, both his mistakes and characteristics in the story.

Blog-Writing Prompt #15 - Forgiven Iran attacker will not be blinded

     Ameneh Bahrami, an Iranian woman who was blinded and disfigured when acid was thrown in her face seven years ago, decided to pardon her attacker just before his sentence was to be carried out. If I were Ameneh Behrami, would I had shown mercy to my attacker, or would I have insisted on eye-for-an-eye justice? I feel that since I am blinded and disfigured, I should not show mercy to my attacker.

   

      Firstly, I feel that by throwing acid in his face, it will allow the people of Iran to understand that for whatever they do, it will have an impact. As the Tehran's deputy public prosecutor, Mahmoud Salarkia, had said, "If this sentence is properly publicised in the media, it will stop the repetition of such incidents," I feel that such will discourage people from being rash and doing things without caring about the consequences. Thus, I feel that I should insist on an eye-for-an-eye justice in order to allow the people of the country to be more disciplined and be more careful.

      Secondly, the Qisas principle of sharia law, which means "retaliation" as an Islamic term, follows the principle of an eye for an eye. For that, I should also throw a bucket of acid in his face. I underwent 17 surgeries in Spain, but remains badly disfigured and blind in both eyes. Such an accident happened, just because he was rash and threw acid in my face. I feel that such was a cruel act and should not be pardoned. Thus, I feel that I should not show mercy to my attacker and follow the principle of an eye for an eye. After all, he was taught the same principle, and should know the consequences for such an act.

       However, human rights advocates have strongly criticized the punishment. They feel that it is too cruel. Is it right to just follow the Qisas principle and follow the principle of an eye for an eye? I think that it is better to show mercy than justice, and thus it might be better to forgive him. However, I think that such an act should not be pardoned, as this is too much.

       In conclusion, I feel that I should insist on an eye-for-an-eye justice. I feel that since I am blinded and disfigured, I should not show mercy to my attacker.This is to ensure more discipline in my country, so that we will have a better and safer place to live in. Thus, I should throw acid in my attacker's face.   

Reflections:
     I feel that although in this case, the attacker was too much and went on to throw a bucket of acid in her face, I feel that mercy is sometime more important than justice. Imagine a place where justice overrule mercy, and everyone just goes on about justice. Nobody cares about mercy, they just want vengeance if others do something wrong to oneself. Such a case will cause everyone on Earth to be hateful and suspicious of one another, not a single person will trust the person next to him! This is surely not what a world aims to be! Thus, I feel that sometimes, mercy is much more important than justice, and it is also important to forgive than to keep remembering the wrongs of others.
   
     Therefore, we should learn to forgive others if the mistake is not that huge. I feel that teaching the person of what he or her had done wrong is much more important, this way, nobody will be unhappy about it.

   Theme: Prejudice

Speech topic: Can prejudice be prevented?

   

      Good Afternoon. Today, my speech will be about prejudice. Do we know anyone who had used any racist slurs before? What about prejudice remarks? I am quite sure the answer is yes. We had seen many people being prejudice towards others, in our school, in our nation. Why is there prejudice? Some people say it is because "bad people exists", but it is actually because people are judging people before having enough knowledge! So, I ask. Can prejudice be prevented? My answer is no, prejudice cannot be prevented.  

     

       Firstly, we need to understand what prejudice is. Prejudice is most commonly used to refer to judging of people based on their personal characteristics. We all like to judge people, some because they want to feel better about themselves, some because they are jealous of one another. This trait is hard to get rid of, because we humans like to be the best.Therefore, as we try to show that we are better than others, prejudice occurs. Thus, prejudice cannot be prevented.

       Secondly, there are many people who are not educated yet. This amount is about 15% of the total number of people in the world. Our world is big and our people is many. Even though the uneducated rate is decreasing, there will still be people in the world that never goes to school. These people will not learn about respect or prejudice, and will then be more likely to judge people based on their physical appearance, leading to prejudice. Therefore, even though we can reduce prejudice, I believe that it is impossible to remove prejudice. 

       I had asked if prejudice can be prevented. Now, I will state again, that prejudice cannot be removed, and it will remain in our life. In conclusion, I feel that although we cannot prevent prejudice, we can work hard to reduce the rate of prejudice. By doing so, our world will become a better and safer place to live in. It will be hard, but it is possible. Thank you.

    A present-day conflict is the "New Australian Law to pass for burqa ban"

      It was a beautiful Sunday. But not so perfect after the Australians's most populous state New South Wales giving the police the power to ask Muslim women to life their veils! This morning, when I was going shopping with my wife in New South Wales. Two more days and we will be leaving to go back to our country. However, just as we reach the shopping mall, a policeman stop us, asking my wife to lift her veil! My wife refused, politely. However, the policeman refused to back down and told my wife angrily that she can be fined up to $55000 or having to spend a whole year inside prison! Of course there was a fuss. I was so angry! What is this! These people do not accept our culture!

       The New South Wales officials say that the law is implemented so that more authority for the police can be assure. I think that it is culturally insensitive! This law harms the basic rights of immigrants Muslims and us, tourists! Although this law does not ban anything directly, chances of burqa clad women being mistreated by police will definitely increase! Thus, I feel that such a rule is insensitive and Australia should make away such a rule!

Reflections:
   I feel that we should not have such a law, although it will mean more authority for the police, reducing crime. However, I feel that it is being insensitive to other people's culture. I think that it is important to respect others, and not create such a law that will anger those of that culture. In the history of Singapore, the Maria Hertogh Riot, was because of religious insensitive, thus leading to anger in the Muslims and such an unhappy situation ended with several deaths and even more injuries. It was such a horrifying experience that the Singapore government used Social Studies to educate the students about the troubles if we do not be sensitive about such topics. Thus, I think that maintaining sensitivity and thus not setting up such a law is better, since religion is a sensitive topic and the Australian government should be more careful and not have such a law.

Diary of Civilian of the World War 2 - Japanese Occupation

Dear Diary,

                  Yesterday was a disaster for me. The Kempeitai, who had treated us civilians badly, beat me today. It was some days after my resources had been finished. During these days, resources were scare. The price of these necessaries soared and I had difficulties paying for necessaries. The value of banana money issued by the Japanese dropped, since the authorities would print more whenever they needed money.  This caused the food quality to decrease greatly. We had to be satisfied with staple food like sweet potatoes and tapioca. 

                  Yesterday, I was queuing up to buy some sweet potatoes. Just then, the Kempeitai came. Everyone started to bow to them. However, I did not spot them as I was busy choosing sweet potatoes. Immediately, they walked towards me. Finally, I spotted them and managed a small bow. However, it was too late as they started to pull me and beat me. Finally after I was rolling on the floor groaning in pain, they left with smug grins over their faces. I was angered, but could not do anything at all.

                   The Japanese Occupation caused great damage to the people of Singapore. We suffered loss of people, and many of my relatives were killed. Everyday, I wished that a miracle would happen and I would be saved from this nightmare. Also, we were too reliable on the British, which I believed that they surrendered    so easily. Singapore, in the future, is going to need to work hard to build up a solid defence, too protect Singapore from enemies. I hope that my children would e able to learn from the previous generation's mistake, and strive hard to make Singapore a better place in the future. 

                  That's all for now. I think I will go to sleep. Such a rotten day it was yesterday, and I had still not recovered from the wounds given to me by the Kempeitai. Hope I live through this horrible war.

In-Class online lesson #7

       The picture depicts a scene of three men rushing into a scene, which seems to be what is left of a battle. They seems to be searching for something, perhaps the bodies of their fallen comrades. They look serious and grave, and they should be so as this is a serious event, since they might save someone, or someone might just collapse under the fallen buildings. The atmosphere is tense and frightening, making one be shocked of the brutality of war. There is a single tree at the middle of the background, being bare unlike the surrounding trees. It could be just like the scene, this place being destroyed, and hard to be replaced, while the other places around it might be of a better situation. Also, these soldiers are still holding their guns, which means that either they do not have the time to put them down, or just simply that there is a possibility of someone attacking them. This scene show the horror of war, how it will cause such mess, and the war will cause something to be gone from the Earth forever, not being able to be replaced. Therefore, war should be avoided.

In-class online lesson #6 - Letter of Encouragement and Empathy

         Dear survivor of the disaster,

    When I knew about the enormous earthquake, my heart really went to all the people in Japan. Such damage was caused to you people, but you did not deserve it. I understand your fears. 8,133 people were confirmed dead, 12,272 missing. It is such a terrible new, and your relatives might be among them.

    The Earth is a strange place. Strange things that are hard to find to why happens. There are losses and gains, and you are now suffering from the effects of a loss. I wished that I could help, in a way or another. I wish that I could donate millions of dollars to the survivors of Japan, to make life better. But I can't, I cannot donate billions or millions of dollars, or work as a worker to search for survivors trapped in the collapsed buildings. I can only write this letter, offering my empathy and encouragement.

    Be strong. The loss of a relative is hard, but it had happened. Although I had not experienced such a disaster, I can feel your sorrows. However, this cannot and will not be undone. This is a terrible experience you are facing, and you must overcome it. This is life. We cannot predict what will happen next, but we can choose whether we would stand up after a fall. Stand up and face the challenge. Let everyone know that you are capable of it. We care, everyone from the world cares. Nobody will be happy when disasters struck in other countries. We plead with you to be strong.

    Staying strong and healthy will be what your families want to. Your families would definitely not want you to follow them. Even though they are gone, their hearts will always be in your mind. I am sure of it. They will not want you to be fall sick. If you do not pull through, that might happen to you. Therefore, please, be strong. With that, I end my letter, once again, I am sorry for what you are going through, and hope that you will stay strong.

Racial slurs should be illegal - Yes or No?

    I strongly believe that Racial slurs should be illegal. This is as racial slurs insult the race group. Imagine how we will feel if others call us by using racial slurs. That would be hurting! Also, insulting these race group because of their skin colours using racial slurs is very rude and it shows how ill-mannered one could be. It thus reflects one's integrity and behaviour, and if we do not want to be shown as a rude and unkind person, then we should not use racial slurs. Lastly, it will show the education of one. It also shows whether one's school is a good or bad one, and this might affect the school's reputation. If one comes from a good school, and uses racial slurs. Such will be ill-mannered, and people might think that the school is teaching us such things! Thus, it will affect our school's reputation.

    Reflection:

     I had witnessed people using racial slurs to make fun of the race group. I had also read books where people use racial slurs, such as "To Kill A Mockingbird". I think that it is very rude to use racial slurs. It shows how uneducated one can be, and I think that no race groups should be made fun of just because they have some differences with other peoples. Therefore, I dislike the use of the racial slurs and is disgusted at the frequent use of racial slurs by people.

       A topic I am interested in - Xiangqi

     I feel that this source is credible and accurate. In the website, it tells us the basic movement of the chess pieces, and this is shown in the wiki page, under the subtitle "Play". Both states the same thing, that the "advisers" move only one space at a time diagonally, and that the "elephants" move two spaces at a time diagonally. Also, both tells us why a certain piece cannot move under the circumstances, such as a "horse" cannot move if there is a piece next to the horse in the horizontal (vertical) direction. This is because the horse is 'blocked' and thus, the move is not allowed.

     However, a difference between the two websites is that the wiki had included the Indian name "king" for this piece was changed to "general"because the China's ruler objected to their royal title "king" or "emperor" being given to a game-piece. However, this information was not present in the source and the "general" was called a "king". This showed that the wiki page did not just take all the information from one source, but from other sources too, so that the wiki page can minimise error that the creator of the source could had made. This is a great way of giving information to us readers. 

Reflections:

   

    I had learnt that we need proper citation and we have to get our information from more than just one source. This is because the source might have some errors, such as the information changing over time, and human errors during the creation of the source. Also, we need to be careful in looking for our source. If we do not do so, we might end up with  misinformation. This shows that information on the Internet might not be the best, and it is sometimes necessary for us to grab a reference book from the library or bookshop, since books are great ways to gain information.

The African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955–1968) refers to the movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against African Americans and restoring voting rights in Southern states.

The civil rights movement was a worldwide political movement for equality before the law occurring between approximately 1950 and 1980. In many situations it took the form of campaigns of civil resistance aimed at achieving change by nonviolent forms of resistance.

Reflections:


I feel that the African Americans should also have their own rights, and it is good that someone would stand up for the African Americans, so that the prejudice against them would be less and the Whites would not treated them like slaves anymore. The Civil Rights Movement allowed the African Americans to finally hold a position in the society, and I am very glad that the Movement took place. Of it had not took place, more African Americans would have been the victims of the KKK, and many of the African Americans would have died, and America would be weak because of the internal wars going on. Therefore, I believe that the Civil Rights Movement was a very significant event in America history.

CIP experience - Blog Prompt #1

      On Monday, 21/3/11, we went to the Old Folks' Home for CIP. We engaged in different activities when we reached the Old Folks' Home. One group helped to clean the windows, while another group had a chit-chat session with the old folks. I had a chat with them. Some of them were about 80 years old. I chatted with them about the Old Folds' Home - if it is comfortable and if they had any friends in the home. All of them said that they had many friends in the home. I also talked about what they did in the Old Folks' Home. Most of them just watched television programs, talk with others and go for walks. I asked about what they had seen outside when they went for walks - anything interesting and about the nature. 

       It was a great experience for me when I found out a lot about these old folks. They had friends and got alone with each other well, but I think that it was quite boring for them in the home. This made me feel sad for them, and I told myself that I will take care of my parents when they are older, and I will support them even if they turn old. I believe that the world needs kind souls to take care of the old folks, and I think that more visits from people that will make them happy will do them much good. I think that the school had given us a great opportunity to let us know what community-involvement program is, and it is very important for our character development.

      The blistering sun shone over the beautiful and lovely shelter, standing magnificently by its own. It was a beautiful Sunday morning, and being in a happy mood, I was skipping all the way to the shelter. The shelter was in a beautifully coated brown and peach, just like a human standing in a coat of brown or peach.
  
      I stepped into the shelter. Ah. Immediately, I could feel myself cool and relaxed. The stone-hard but comfortable stone chairs in the shelter invited me to have a seat on them. Sitting down, I closed my eyes. I could hear voices from children nearby, at the playground. Then, I felt the wind. What a lovely breeze blowing! The wind brings the sweet scent, from the flowers, to my nose. It smelled like perfume.
    
     Finally, I opened m eyes. I turned my eyes to those flowers beside the shelter. The beautiful colour of the flowers made me excited. As I am watching, there was suddenly a wind, and the flowers seemed to be dancing to the rhythm. Moreover, they seemed to be inviting me to have a dance too. I walked to the flowers, light on my feet. I knelt down on one of my legs. I touched the petals of the flowers. It was smooth and beautiful. However, it was the scent that was the best. They smelled like honey. As I walked back to the stone chairs and had a seat, I was unable to resist closing my eyes and smell the delicious scent. Then, I slowly drifted away...

Character Sketch

       Atticus Finch can be tolerant and intolerant from time to time. Most of the time he is intolerant is because his children, Scout and Jem, does not listen to him. Such include, asking Jem to go home and Jem does not, and asking Scout to apologise to her aunt when she refused to. However, Atticus is also tolerant at some times, such as talking to his friend, Mr Tate. Atticus looked at Mr Tate as if he appreciated what he said, when he said that Jem did not kill Bob Ewell, and when talking about neigbours. 

      This can show that Atticus is a good father and a man who is able to show respect for others, since he is able to educate Scout and Jem by teaching them how to differentiate what is wrong or right and teaching them morales like how they should not judge a book by its cover, instead of just talking to them like what he would to friends. This also shows that he does not mind what others do, but he would not allow is children to become one who does not follow the law.

If I did not read "To Kill A Mocking Bird" and just read this poem, I will think that Boo is someone who is sick, since he is coughing and panting. Also, I will think that he is very scared of the streets, as he wants people to bring him to his own home. Also, I would think that he had not seen the sun for a very long time, as his hands and face are very white. Lastly, I would feel that Boo is a lonely and introvert person, as he went inside his house and the poet did not see him again. This shows that Bo does not like to outside his house.

Who is your favourite character in "To Kill a Mocking Bird"

      My favorite character is Boo Radley. Boo Radley, who's real name is Arthur, was seen as a mad and dangerous person by almost all of the people in Maycomb. When he was about 30 years old, he attacked his own father with a pair of scissors. He continued to stay in his house because his family did not want to send him for psychiatric help. While almost all the people of the town believing that he is evil, Boo is actually not. He gave Jem and Scout some presents, placed a blanket over Scout while she was watching the fire, which took place at Miss Maudie's house. In the end of the story, Bo also prevent Bob Ewell from attacking Scout and Jem by stabbing Bob.
      Boo's heroic act in the end made me liked him, although I did not like him very much at the beginning, when there was rumors of him being evil and attacking his own father with a pair of scissors. However, I grew to like him when he help Jem and Scout escape from the "Big Bad" Bob Ewell. Therefore, I feel that Boo, who is mysterious and heroic, is my favourite character in "To Kill a Mocking Bird".
     After reading "To Kill a Mocking Bird", I realised that the world might not be as fair as many people thinks. Prejudice like racism and discrimination could be found anywhere. People might feel that someone was a criminal, a madman, or even a evil person just because the person is different. In Boo's position, he stayed in his house and did not come out. For Tom Robinson, it was because of his skin colour. Therefore, I feel that there is a need to know about racism, and everyone should be treated equally, with no exception.

Re-read Ray Bradbury's story "All Summer in a Day." and identify who should be held responsible for Margot's treatment, and why

       After re-reading "All Summer in a Day", I feel that everyone in the class,especially William, should be held responsible for Margot's treatment. This is because he is the one who keep bullying Margot, and even encourages the other students to do the same. Such bullying consisted of accusing her of not writing her poem about the Sun, pushing her around and being extremely rude to her.

       As for the others in the class, I feel that they should not had followed William and bullied poor Margot, such as putting her in the closet. This shows that they do not respect Margot, and I do not think that it is the appropriate thing to do. Therefore, I believe that both William and the class should had behaved better, and not bully Margot just because she is indifferent from the rest of them.

        

       If I were one of the school children, I would never had be like the rest of my classmates and bully Margot just because she's different. I will not be like William, who thinks that he can bully Margot just because he does not like her. Instead of being like the others, I would rather befriend Margot and not the rest, who are not kind. I need a friend who's caring and kind, and I know that none of the children in the class is like this. Especially not William. Also, I would ask them to stop harassing Margot, and to mind their own business. If they do not listen to me or even try to threaten me or anything, I would immediately report to the teacher, and I believe that the teacher will not just sit down there doing nothing while Margot gets bullied.  

Blog-Writing Prompt #5

         When I was in Primary 6 two years back, when it was after exams, my class took part in an activity called the Innomart. It was an activity where students think up of products or games to attract people to purchase or play, and the money collected will be for the charity. Each class was to come up with about 2 to 3 games or products. Our class came out with 2 games and 1 product. The product was called Moodz and our games were called Pingz and Pongz. Although I had tried to make a game myself, I was not successful and the game was not used for the activity.

          Even though my game was not chosen, I had a fun time as a volunteer at our game stall. It was quite fun when I see people playing our games and buying our products. During this time, every volunteer had to try their their best to cooperate with one another, to avoid some silly mistake like returning wrong amount of money to the customer or giving him the wrong amount of cards, used to exchange for items when they win a game. Also, the person who collects the money has to be very attentive and listen to the other people who will give him the money. It was very enjoyable except for some mistakes during the first day. We also won the best selling award and the best game award!

          Through the activity, I learn that I could actually speak up and persuade people to play our games. This was important as people might not know about our stall. Therefore, I feel that persuading people to play our games is one of the most important job.

Step 1: The message I wished to convey is that people likes to laugh at others, but they themselves have the same mistakes.

Step 2: It makes the reader feel that the characters are funny, and they might start to reflect on it.

Step 3: I think that I should put the background as an outdoor image, since I do not want it to be limited to just human beings.

Step 4: By using animals and plants, it can make it more funny, since it is a common thing for human beings to
laugh at one another.

Create your own Toon

1. This is to create a more funny image for the readers, and allow them to reflect on their own actions and see if they had done something silly like the plants.
2. The images contributes to my setting because plants are found outdoors, while animals like being outdoors. This make the setting looks more neutral and relaxed, since the natural environment makes one feel comfortable.
3. I used contrast to contribute to my theme. Although plants and animals cannot talk (in human language), this will make it more interesting to read.
